Daniel Craig and Mads Mikkelsen in Casino Royale (Sony)Casino Royale was an integral movie for the James Bond franchise.
While Pierce Brosnan’s four-film stint as the spy was a financial success, his final two entries, The World Is Not Enough and especially Die Another Day, were met with negative reviews.
So when Daniel Craig was cast as Brosnan’s replacement the decision was quickly made to take Bond in a new direction.
And that’s exactly why Martin Campbell was brought in to direct 2006’s Casino Royale, as he had previously overseen Goldeneye, Brosnan’s critically-acclaimed first outing.

Campbell has now been discussing his efforts on Casino Royale, telling Polygon that those behind the James Bond franchise “wanted to bring it back to earth” with the film.
“When I came on board, I felt the same way. I felt the whole thing needed to have its feet well and truly on the ground,” he said.

One of the main plot points of Casino Royale revolves around Bond taking on Mads Mikkelsen’s terrorist financier Le Chiffre at a high-stakes game of poker.
Looking back on these poker sequences, Campbell said that the key to making them “convincing” was that they are not just about “the card games,” adding: “It’s the stakes. It’s also two guys eye-******* one another, basically. That was the secret.”

Campbell solved this problem by making sure the film’s 30-minute sequence set in the casino showcased Bond’s mental capability as well as his mortality. This was particularly riveting since Campbell described Craig’s Bond as “a bull in the china shop” throughout Casino Royale, adding: “He just hurls himself no matter what the dangers are, he’s not really thinking.”
Craig’s final appearance as Bond will hopefully hit cinemas next year, as No Time To Die is still scheduled for release in April.
Casino Royale (2006) is one of the most highly anticipated James Bond movies that most of us have seen or, at the very least, have had on our list of must-watch movies. Having said that, you might be surprised to find out that there is much more to the movie than it seems.
We are fascinated by behind-the-scenes facts about famous movies, and after seeing a blog post about another hit movie – Casino (1995), by the popular Lucky Nugget online casino, we also want to share one with you!
From broken cars to accidental scenes, today, we’re going to explore 5 interesting movie facts you probably didn’t know about Casino Royale!
Daniel Craig Gained 20 Pounds of Muscle for the Role
You might be shocked to know that Daniel Craig was not born with a body like this because he makes it look so easy. In reality, he had to prepare himself physically for the role by adhering to a strict diet and fitness regime. By quitting smoking, eating mostly proteins, and vigorously training all days of the week, with some sessions as long as 12 hours, he achieved the James Bond physique we know from the movie.
One of The Most Famous Scenes Was an Accident
We all remember that legendary scene where Bond walks out of the water and makes eye contact with the villain’s wife, right? Well, it turns out that it was an accident. Daniel Craig has stated that originally he was supposed to float off in the water, but because he hit an awkwardly situated sandbank, he had to stand up and walk out of the water. This scene went on to become the main image in the promotional materials. Many viewers thought the scene was paying homage to Ursula Andress in the first Bond movie, which helped win over many fans.

One Stunt Entered into the Guinness Book of World Records
During one afternoon of shooting the barrel-roll scene, three Aston Martin cars were destroyed, each worth $300,000. It was totally worth it, though, because the Aston Martin DBS barrel-roll stunt was officially entered into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2006.
The original specifications of the Aston Martin DBS stated that a standard ramp would not be enough to make the car roll, so an air-powered cannon was installed behind the driver’s seat. This made the car roll seven times, which became record-breaking.
James Bond Could Have Been Played by Other Actors
Even though after Daniel Craig’s portrayal of James Bond, it’s hard to imagine anyone else in his place, it could have easily been someone else.
Besides Daniel Craig, another actor that almost got the part was Henry Cavill. However, being only 22 years old at the time, he was believed to have been too young. The producers also considered Sam Worthington, Christian Bale, Ewan McGregor, and Karl Urban, to name a few. Hugh Jackman was offered the part, but he turned it down due to his commitment to shooting an X-Men film. Not many people know that Daniel Craig also turned down the role, at first, worrying that the movie will follow a standard pattern. But after reading the finished script, he changed his mind.
