Casino Oxygen Levels
Myths, rumors, and urban legends, are pervasive, silly, almost always wrong. They are also almost impossible to kill. In today’s blog we are going to look at one particular urban legend that is closely linked to the HVAC industry: Casinos pump oxygen into the air to keep people awake, alert, and gleefully gambling. Without further ado, lets dive right into the rumor!
- Oxygen levels at any elevation drop during the hours that we sleep. Using the oxygen concentrator while you sleep in higher altitudes can assist in getting better night’s rest so you can enjoy the next day. Plan ahead to stay oxygenated and refreshed while you adapt to higher elevations.
- The sensor is programmed to instantly shut down the Molecular Oxidizer if the activated oxygen concentration reaches 50 ppb. Typical levels inside a casino with Casino Air installed is in the 20-30 ppb range, almost always lower than the atmospheric ozone level outside. After a thunderstorm, ambient levels are typically 150 ppb or higher.
First off, we should establish the fact that this myth is 100 percent false. This doesn’t stop people from talking about it and telling their friends with absolute certainty that it is, in fact, correct. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s learn how and why we know this to be true.
As a casino is very close to 1 atm. Even pure oxygen would not be dangerous to health but an extreme fire risk. An increase in oxygen of 10% (10% more than usually) would be around 23% of the air being oxygen (to normal 21%) giving a partial pressure of 0.23 atm. – Bent Nov 17 '16 at 14:02.
The primary object when it comes to casinos pumping oxygen into the build, is that it is illegal! In fact, members of the Las Vegas Gaming Commission make regular appearances in each casino to test the oxygen levels in the building. They are make sure this exact thing isn’t happening. So there is reason number one.
Next, let’s talk about the infrastructure that would be required for casinos to pull this off. Las Vegas casinos are MASSIVE. The interior of a typical Vegas casino could be measure at a minimum of 1 million cubic meters. And many are much larger than that. For them to raise the oxygen level by even 1 percent, they would have to pump in about 40,000 cubic meters of oxygen gas each and every day. That would just about require a commercial oxygen plant to be nearby.
Finally, we have to consider the fire hazards. Oxygen is a well-known accelerant, which means it dramatically speeds up the spread of a fire. Pumping oxygen into a crowed casino would be very dangerous indeed.
There is plenty of excitement in Vegas, and attractions for the whole family to enjoy. If you, you and your significant other, or your family are planning a trip to the Entertainment Capital of the World, you should be able to do what everyone else will be doing, despite needing to use oxygen therapy. From gambling to taking in a live show, to eating at one of the unique restaurants in this town, we will make sure your portable oxygen concentrator rental will meet your oxygen needs the whole time.
Don’t forget that Las Vegas is located in a desert, so the temperatures can get pretty overwhelmingly hot during the summer time. Hot and dry in the extreme can be a big problem for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), so if hot and dry bothers you, you will want to visit during the early spring or mid to late fall to beat the heat. During the summer months, the average highs can easily go above 104 degrees, which is the maximum operational temperature for most of our portable oxygen concentrators. March and October to November have the best temperatures in this arid part of the country.
Take the whole family to see a magic show, one of the things Vegas is famous for, besides gambling and impromptu weddings done by Elvis impersonators. Don’t be fooled by Vegas being called “Sin City” – you can also have some good clean fun by taking the younger ones to the Atomic Testing Museum, for some science that even the non-scientist of the family will enjoy. Check out some Vegas history of old neon signs in the Neon Boneyard, or view the beautiful red rock formations at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Take the hiking trails for some exercise, or admire the red rock formations on the 13-mile drive tour.
When you go on a long walk through the hiking trails, be sure to bring your spare battery or external battery belt, so you won’t need to worry about running out of battery power while you are away from civilization. All of our portable oxygen rentals come with a spare battery or battery belt, as well as a cord to charge your oxygen concentrator while relaxing in your hotel. You can also add more spare batteries to your rental order, with the help of one of our sales reps, if you want even more mobility and freedom.
